Art Museums in the Digital Age

My research question is how the role of art museums has change in the digital age. As an art major I see how easy it is to access good quality museum pictures online and want to explore not just the negative ways museums have been impacted by technology but also the good. I think this question is important as it can be considered globally and can lead to better preservation and accessibility of art to audiences around the world . Although, we also need understand the financial constraints and the decreased in curatorial control of museums in the digital age. In my opinion, currently I believe more people increasingly see museum art being accessed online as a good thing so they don’t have to travel. Also the role of art has changed dramatically over centuries were I believe it is not as cherished as it was and people question more about its importance in society. I think this thinking definitely needs to be changed as art is a part of history and educating people more about art processes would help the ignorance of those who say “why is this here, anyone can do that.” From this research question I hope to learn how museum roles, funding, and overall engagement has been affected by digital technology while also exploring how this inevitable factor can be a positive thing.
